Larry Evans

Author & Founder, Western Montana Mycological Association

Larry Evans, also known as, The Fungal Boogieman, has been teaching mycology since you had to explain what that is. He’s authored dozens of articles, notably, “Soil Carbon and You”, and is a frequent guest on radio shows and podcasts, sharing his vast knowledge with eager audiences.

Back in 1991 Larry co-founded the Western Montana Mycological Association, and he has been instrumental in organizing festivals and forays around Colorado and the Pacific Northwest.  By 1997, he began operating the Black Dog Cafe, and a few years later he became the first approved commercial mushroom vendor in Montana.

His influence extends globally within the mushroom community, and his mushroom adventures are documented on his YouTube channel, Fungal Jungal.  During an chance encounter in Khabarovsk, Russia while sourcing non-timber forest products, an American diplomat dubbed him the name Indiana Jones of Mushrooms.  After 15 years of travels to South America, and contributing nearly 2,000 collections placed in the Bolivia National Herbarium, Larry authored a “Field Guide to Tropical Amazon Mushrooms”, which has since been reprinted in Spanish.**  In Ecuador, Larry spent five years furthering remediation agendas, and has developed myco-remediation projects with Amazon (CoRenewal) and Garden City Compost.

Expanding on his creative side, Larry wrote and produced two CDs of mushroom music; Fungal Boogie and Fungal Boogieman.  He was also featured in his Telluride Mushroom Festival role in Ron Mann’s 2009 come-documentary, Know Your Mushrooms.

**Copies of “Field Guide to Amazon Mushrooms”  will be available during the Eagle Mushroom & Wild Food Festival.
